Rafael Carvalho becomes the new Bellator middleweight champion at Bellator 144


Brandon Halsey (9-1) and Rafael Carvalho (12-1) met in a middleweight title bout as the main event at Bellator 144. Halsey took him down in the early part of round one and almost won the fight by side choke, but couldn’t pull it off due to the heart of Carvalho. In the second round, Halsey attempted the same and got the same result. Once Carvalho got to his feet, he landed a sick liver kick that put Halsey down to the ground. Carvalho would finish him off with strikes to become the new middleweight champion.

Bellator 144 took place Friday, Oct. 23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card aired on Spike following prelims online.

Brandon Halsey (9-1) is currently on a one-fight losing streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 5-1. He beat Hector Ramirez in November of 2013 by first round knockout and then he beat Joe Pacheco in April of 2014 by unanimous decision. In his next two bouts, he submitted Brett Cooper with a first round armbar in July of 2014 and then beat Alexander Shlemenko in September of 2014 by first round rear-naked choke to win the Middleweight title. He is coming off a 4th round TKO of Kendall Grove at Bellator 137. He lost to Rafael Carvalho by second-round TKO at Bellator 144.

Rafael Carvalho (12-1) is currently on a six-fight winning streak. In his last six bouts, he beat Gustavo Machado in July of 2013 by unanimous decision, Sergio Souza at IFC 4 by third-round TKO, and then Marui Roque at TMC9 by first-round TKO. He then joined Bellator MMA. He beat Brian Rogers at Bellator 125 in his Bellator debut by first-round TKO and then beat Joe Schilling at Bellator 136 by unanimous decision. He beat Brandon Halsey by second-round TKO at Bellator 144.

Here is the play-by-play result of this fight:

Round 1: Halsey took Carvalho down right away with a double leg takedown and worked him over with strikes. Halsey stepped over into side control and locked in a side choke, but Carvalho held on and got out. Carvalho went for a reversed triangle that looked dangerous, but Halsey got out. Halsey transitioned to the top where he landed some big strikes.

Round 2: Halsey clinched with him in the early going of this round. Carvalho separated himself from Halsey and landed a sick kick to the liver. He finished him with strikes once Halsey was on the ground!

Result: Rafael Carvalho def. Brandon Halsey via second-round KO.
