Jon jones wins the interim light heavyweight title at UFC 197

Jon Jones and Ovince Saint Preux met in an Interim light heavyweight title bout as the main event of UFC 197. The former UFC champion was calm in his return to the world famous octagon, and he didn’t let the pressure get to him. In round one, Jones was feeling out Preux and was showing the old Jones. Preux let Jones come to him. In the second round, Jones went for a takedown but was stuffed. Saint Preux cracked him a few times in this round as well. However, Saint Preux was slowing down in this round. In round three, Saint Preux started to let his hands go. The fans were booing heavily in this round due to the lack of action. Jones landed a big head kick and then a right hand in this round. In round four, things got interesting. Jones slammed him down to the ground twice in this round. Jones would get side control then back mount and landed some serious elbows that did a ton of damage to Saint Preux. In the fifth and final round, Jones continued to show his dominance and landed one of the biggest slams in MMA that I’ve ever seen. Jones picked him apart in this round and earned the decision victory.

Jon Jones is the new interim UFC light heavyweight champion. He will face current UFC light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier, later this year.

In his post-fight interview, Jones said, “I don’t think I want that belt. It’s not the real belt. … Sorry if you weren’t satisfied with that. I tried my best. I really needed that fight before I fight for my title. My next fight is going to be a hell of a lot better, I promise. I need to kill this Debbie Downer attitude. I just won a fight in the UFC. I have a lot to be grateful for.”

UFC 197 took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016. The main card aired on pay-per-view while the prelims aired on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Jones (22-1) is currently on a 13-fight winning streak. In his six bouts, he beat Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 by fourth round submission, Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 by first round TKO, Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 by decision, Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 by decision and Daniel Cormier at UFC 182 by decision. He beat Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 197 by decision.

Saint Preux (19-8) is currently on a one-fight losing streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 3-3. He beat lost to Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 47 by decision. He went on a two fight winning streak with wins over Shogun Rua at UFC Fight Night 56 by first-round KO and Patrick Cummins at UFC on FOX 15 by first-round KO. He then lost to Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 73 by third-round rear-naked choke. He beat Rafael Cavalcante at UFC Fight Night 82 by unanimous decision. He lost to Jon Jones at UFC 197 by decision.

Here is the play-by-play result of this fight:

Round 1: Jones comes out crawling then stands up. Jones threw a spinning back kick to the body. Jones missed a spinning kick, and Saint Preux tagged him with an uppercut. Saint Preux started to throw leg kicks in the middle of the round. Jones clinched with him late in the round and landed some knees.

Round 2: Preux was doing a lot of hand movement. Jones went for a single leg takedown at 4:15 but Preux shook him off. Jones landed a hard kick to the body at 3:52. Saint Preux landed a good right hook at 1:45. Jones was starting to land leg kick as well. Saint Preux was slowing down in this round. Jones landed a spinning back kick to the body. Saint Preux tagged him with 30-seconds left with a right hand.

Round 3: Saint Preux landed a good combo at 4:05 and started to let his hands go. Jones connected with a spinning elbow at 3:40. The fans were booing heavily in this round due to the lack of action. Jones landed a big head kick and then a right hand at 1:34.

Round 4: Saint Preux tried to land leg kicks and was doing so successfully. Jones clinched with him at 3:40 and Jones picked him and slammed him down at 3:25. Saint Preux got to his feet, and Jones landed a knee strike to the face. Saint Preux threw a body kick, and it was caught. Jones pressed him against the fence and slammed him down at 2:00. Jones got side control and landed a series of elbows. Saint Preux tried to kick off of the fence, but Jones kept him pinned down. Saint Preux scrambled, but Jones got mount with 45-seconds to go. Jones got back mount, and he landed big shots.

Round 5: Saint Preux was very tired at this point, and Jones was T-ing off on him with strikes and elbows. Jones picked him up and slammed him down to the ground at 2:05 and Jones landed a soccer kick. Saint Preux got to his feet at 1:45. Jones clinched with him at 1:17 and landed some elbows.

Result: Jon Jones def. Ovince St. Preux via unanimous decision (50-45 x2, 50-44)
