Cheick Kongo edges out Vinicius Queiroz at Bellator 150


Cheick Kongo (24-10-2) and Vinicius Queiroz (8-4) met in a heavyweight bout in the main event of Bellator 150. Kongo fought smart in this fight, but it didn’t exactly make for the most exciting fight in the world. Kongo easily won the first-round, but Queiroz dominated the second round with a mid-round takedown and ground and pound. The third round was very close with both fighters having their moments. The judges awarded Kongo the split decision victory.

Cheick Kongo is currently on a two-fight winning streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 4-2. He lost to Vitaly Minakov in April of 2014 by unanimous decision. He then ripped off a two-fight winning streak with a second-round TKO win over Eric Smith at Bellator 120 and the a first-round rear naked choke win over Lavar Johnson in September of 2014. In his next bout, he lost to King Mo in February of 2015 by split decision. He beat Alexander Volkov at Bellator 139 by unanimous decision. He beat Vinicius Queiroz at Bellator 150 by split decision.

Vinicius Queiroz is currently on a one-fight losing streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 3-3. He lost Rob Broughton at UFC 120 by third round rear-naked choke, then beat Mark Holata at Bellator 75 by first-round armbar, and lost to Alexander Volkov at Bellator 80 by second round TKO. He then ripped off two straight wins with wins over Lavar Johnson at Bellator 102 by first-round KO, and Emerton Teixeira at Bellator 143 by second round arm-triangle choke. He lost to Cheick Kongo at Bellator 150 by split decision.

Bellator 150 took place at Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas on Friday, February 26th, 2016.

Here is the play-by-play result of this fight:

Round 1: Kong was throwing a lot of kicks throughout the round, but there wasn’t much action through the first two minutes. Kong clinched and worked for a takedown at 1:45. Queiroz with a trip takedown just under one minute to go. Kongo got back to his feet quickly. Queiroz landed a spinning back fist and then Kongo took him down. Kongo clinched with him to end the round.

Round 2: Kongo comes out with a quick pace and really started to let his hands go, which had Queiroz back peddling to avoid them. Queiroz took him down at 2:22 with a double leg and landed in half guard.

Round 3: A very close round. Kongo controlled the first few minutes of the round with the clinch then Queiroz tagged him and Kongo dropped. Queiroz tried to finish it, but could not. Queiroz stayed on top and landed some good shots. They exchanged to the finish.

Results: Cheick Kongo def. Vinicius Queiroz via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)
