Chael Sonnen vs. Tito Ortiz won’t be taking place in 2016

Chael Sonnen claimed that he would be fighting Tito Ortiz on Nov. 19 at Bellator 165. However, that’s not the case.

“I think it deserves to be its own card,” Bellator President Scott Coker said to MMA Junkie on Monday. “We just don’t want to rush it.”

Ortiz recently told Submission Radio that he would not be pushed to fight this year.

“Chael called me out (for Nov. 19),” he said. “I’m the one who calls the shots – not him. We’ll fight in January. We’re not going to fight in November. I’m gonna give him some time to get used to being at his weight, off of steroids, so he can train through that time.

“I’m calling the shots, not Chael Sonnen. Yeah, he talks well, yeah he does his thing. But no, this is my weight class. I’m the one who calls the shots. Tito Ortiz is gonna call the shots. Chael Sonnen is going to have to wait until after the first of the year.”

Ortiz (18-11) is currently on a two-fight winning streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 2-3. In those six bouts, he lost to Rashad Evans by second-round TKO at UFC 133, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 140 by first-round TKO and then lost to Forrest Griffin at UFC 148 by unanimous to end his stint in the UFC. He signed with Bellator MMA and has won ever since. He beat Alexander Shlemenko at Bellator 120 by first-round triangle choke and then beat Stephan Bonnar at Bellator 131 by split decision. He was submitted by Liam McGeary in the first round at Bellator 142.

In his last five MMA bouts, Sonnen went 3-2 and lost his last bout to Rashad Evans back at UFC 167 by first-round TKO.
